Self Awareness
SELF AWARENESS Finding #1: A McGill University
study found that pattern recognition and mental representation scores improved
significantly for students given piano instruction over a three-year period.
They also found that self-esteem and musical skills measures improved for the
students given piano instruction.

years of piano instruction on children's cognitive abilities, academic
achievement, and self-esteem," presented at the meeting of the Music Educators

SELF AWARENESS Finding #2: College-age musicians
are emotionally healthier than their non-musician counterparts. A study
conducted at the University of Texas looked at 362 students who were in their
first semester of college. They were given three tests, measuring performance
anxiety, emotional concerns and alcohol related problems. In addition to having
fewer battles with the bottle, researchers also noted that the college-aged
music students seemed to have surer footing when facing tests.

SELF AWARENESS Finding #3: To put it simply, we
need to keep the arts in education because they instill in students the habits
of mind that last a lifetime: critical analysis skills, the ability to deal with
ambiguity and to solve problems, perseverance and a drive for excellence.
Moreover, the creative skills children develop through the arts carry them
toward new ideas, new experiences, and new challenges, not to mention personal
satisfaction. This is the intrinsic value of the arts, and it cannot be
overestimated.

Initiative on the Arts in Education.
SELF AWARENESS Finding #4: For at-risk youth, that
segment of society most likely to suffer from limited lifetime productivity, the
arts contribute to lower recidivism rates; increased self-esteem; the
acquisition of job skills; and the development of much needed creative thinking,
problem solving and communications skills.

SELF AWARENESS Finding #5: Secondary students who
participaed in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of
all substances (alcohol, tobcco, illicit drugs).
